Product description

A large shrub or small tree with a spreading crown. In regions with warmer climates, it can reach up to 10 m in height. In our climate, it rarely exceeds 2 m in height (reaches a similar width). One of the few varieties with increased resistance to frost, therefore it can also be grown in Eastern Europe. Older plants can withstand temperature drops as low as -15 °C.

Ficus is cultivated for its edible fruits - figs. Pear-shaped fruit, approx. 5-8 cm long, red-brown with a purple tint. They are fleshy, sweet and very tasty, contain large amounts of sugars, vitamin C, B vitamins and carotene. Excellent both as dessert fruit to be eaten raw, as well as dried fruits and nuts and preserves. Brown Turkey is parthenocarpic variety and does not require male pollinators to bear fruit. An interesting fact is that what we call a fruit in the case of fig trees is actually an overgrown inflorescence.

How to grow a Fig tree?

Although it is one of the more hardy varieties, it is still sensitive to frost (zone 8A) and requires proper growing conditions. It grows best on humus-rich, fertile, moderately moist soils and in sunny places, sheltered from the wind. The pH of the soil is slightly acidic to slightly alkaline. In the case of ground cultivation, the plant should be protected for the winter by piling a high mound of bark or earth around its base. In field cultivation, shoots freeze every year, but they regenerate very quickly in the spring, giving large growths. It also sets fruit in the ground, but usually they do not mature before the onset of frost and fall immature. For this reason, in order to obtain ripe fruit, the plant should be grown in polytunnels, greenhouses, or in a pot, which is moved to a bright and cool room during the winter, e.g. a garage (the temperature should be positive, but not higher than approx. 4 ° C).
