Product description

A low, compact, evergreen shrub growing to approx. 0.3 - 0.4 m in height. The leaves are dark green, leathery, glossy on the top. Small, white flowers, gathered in loose clusters. They are shaped like jugs. It blooms twice a year: in May and August. It is characterized by large, red fruits (spherical berries), slightly bitter in taste. They ripen twice: the first harvest takes place in August and the second in October. Berries contain many vitamins.

Requires a sunny or semi-shaded position. It prefers light, well-drained, moderately moist and acidic soils (pH 3.5-4.5). Fully frost-resistant variety. Recommended for gardens as an ornamental and useful plant.

Medicinal properties of lingonberry:

  • for diseases of the urinary system: lingonberry leaves in herbal medicine are used in diseases of the urinary system (e.g. in inflammation of the bladder and kidneys, or urolithiasis). The substance contained in the leaves - arbutin - has a strong disinfectant effect on the urinary tract, reducing inflammation.
  • for diarrhea: tannins contained in blueberry leaves inhibit diarrhea, and also have a bactericidal effect on the bacterial flora of the stomach and intestines, inactivating bacterial toxins.
  • can prevent ulcers and stomach cancer: Estonian scientists from the University of Tartu argue that water extracts from lingonberry leaves have a bactericidal effect on Helicobacter pylori, which is closely related to the occurrence of about 80% of gastric and duodenal ulcers. H. pylori can also lead to stomach cancer.
  • for problems of the digestive tract: lingonberry fruit is characterized by the ability to regulate the work of the digestive tract. That is why it is recommended mainly for stomach problems. However, preliminary scientific research shows that they may have a much wider application.

In addition to its medicinal properties, lingonberry has also been used in cosmetics. Arbutin, contained in blueberry leaves, is used in dermocosmetics as a means of lightening skin discoloration (brightens skin pigmentation changes).

Lingonberry is used to produce jams, preserves and other preserves. On their basis, you can also prepare medicinal tinctures or infusions.
